About SMP

Meet Sophie

Sophie is a professional and fully qualified Physiotherapist (MSc) and Sports Therapist (BSc).  She completed her BSc at Huddersfield University in 2009, and went on to complete an MSc at Northumbria University at the end of 2012.

 

Specialising in musculoskeletal Physiotherapy and sports injuries and providing treatment, prevention, management and rehabilitation for patients of all ages and abilities up to elite sporting level.

Sophie has a wealth of sporting physiotherapy experiences include working with professional sportsmen and women at Sunderland AFC, Sheffield United FC, Durham City FC, Huddersfield Giants RFC and the Great Britain Handball Team. This is in addition to working alongside Northumbria University for members of the University football, netball, volleyball and basketball teams. Sophie has also assisted many theatrical performers, including cast members of Cats, Dirty Dancing, Avenue Q, the popstar group Little Mix and a knight of realm Shakespearian actor and comedian.

 

On a personal level Sophie is passionate about all sports and is a competitive amateur runner – competing for her local club, Tyne Bridge Harriers, winning events in England and Europe. Current personal bests include 18.13 for the 5k, 38.12 for the 10k, and 1:03:36 for 10 miles. Sophie’s best half marathon time to date is 1:26:26 and best full marathon is 3:16:08 at London.  She has also completed some local sprint and standard Triathlons and has a love for outdoor swimming and cycling! Prior to running, Sophie was a keen footballer, playing to County level and also enjoyed a spell playing for Charlton Athletic.

Our practice consists of both Sophie Marr (physiotherapist) and Jon Bateman from Endurance Academy (nutritionist, performance analyst and coach).  Services where we aim to get you back on the start line, fitter, faster and stronger than ever before.

Sophie's Qualifications

As well as BSc and MSc qualifications, Sophie is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

 

Recent courses and skills include:

  • Biomechanics and running retraining

  • Kinesiology taping level 1,2 and 3

  • FA AREA (advanced resuscitation and emergency aid)

  • FA Safeguarding Children and Vulnerable Adults

  • Acupuncture

  • Neuroscience – assessment and management of the nervous system

  • A wealth of experience working with elite sports players from initial treatment to long term rehabilitation from serious operations.

Meet Jon

Jon Bateman, the founder of Endurance Academy, Performance Nutritionist and Endurance Coach of the Endurance Academy. 

Jon is a Registered Performance Nutritionist (SENR). He has an MREs in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Northumbria and a Post Graduate Diploma in Performance Nutrition from the Institute of Performance Nutrition (IOPN). Jon is a level 4 qualified sports massage therapist too.

Jon is a Lecturer on the University of Sunderland’s BSc Sports Science program, teaching Nutrition and Metabolism. He is also a UK Anti-Doping Advisor and ISAK Level 1 Technician. Previously Jon worked for British Cycling prior to going independent in 2010.


Jon is very passionate about all sports; running competitively for Tyne Bridge Harriers, cycling and competing for Endurance Academy and regularly looking for new locations to go surfing! Jon has a current PB of 1.25.00 for the half marathon and looks to better this over the year.
